Faces of FAT - Luke

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Hey there, I’m Luke. I’d consider myself a pretty down to earth, hardworking guy who just loves to get outside, travel, listen to good music, spend time with good friends, family and most importantly, experience new things. I’m currently working as Operations Manager for Goodlids, a small hemp brand based in Mt Eden. I’m also an identical twin which is pretty sweet.

How did you hear about FAT, do you remember your first session?

I heard about FAT through Instagram. I like keeping up with Auckland’s health and fitness scene on social media so essentially it was the algorithm that brought me here!

We have shared a few workouts together, what makes you keep coming back?

I love the variation of the FAT workouts and the fact it is always outside which helps keep my motivation high and the workouts interesting and fun. I really enjoy the morning sessions because of the beautiful amber sunrises over the city and Kanye West pumping me up. It’s just the best way to start my day.

What would you say to someone hesitating to come to FAT?

Just go for it. I started at FAT by myself and was nervous at first. As soon as I got involved though I let my guard down and just fully embraced the environment. As long as you're willing to put in the mahi and listen to a french man shouting in your ear don’t hesitate!

Do you have a most memorable moment with us?

Haha, yeah during my second session I was super motivated and working hard. Unfortunately I didn’t have any water or pre workout beforehand so I got about three quarters through the workout and had to stop because I was feeling extremely light headed and nauseous. I ended up spewing behind one of the silos…

Outside of our weekly session, what is your relationship with exercise/movement?

I’ve been getting into running lately and I’ve noticed a lot of improvement in my aerobic capacity and endurance because of the HIIT workouts I’ve been doing at FAT. Exercise and wellbeing are essential for me and I make it a real priority to get some form of movement on most days to help alleviate any stress or anxious thoughts.  Outside of general exercise I also have a fair few hobbies. I love chewing the fat with my brother on the golf course and playing social tennis with mates. I’ll often head off tramping every other weekend to explore beautiful Aotearoa as well.

Any movement goals in 2024?

I’ve signed up for a beginners yoga course at the end of the month. My dad is a long time yogi who has steadily been encouraging me to try it out. I've always felt a strong spiritual connection between mind and body so it's exciting to be exploring that further with such an ancient practice like yoga.
